Windows 7 is still continuing to increase the gap between its predecessor, Windows Vista. Windows 7 is nearing its first birthday now and after nearly 11 months its done quite well for itself.

According to the new stats released by Net Applications, it’s still growing and now holds an impressive 15.87 percentage share of the overall OS market. Windows Vista on the other hand, is still dropping and being left behind with just 14% of the market. It was only in July the Windows 7 managed to overtake Windows Vista by grabbing 14.34 percent of the market, marking a major milestone for Microsoft and their most successful operating system to date.

Windows 7 is still rapidly growing and I’m sure we can only see this figure begin to increase even more as it reaches it’s first anniversary, not to mention the increase in PC sales coming up to the holiday season. It seems Microsoft are managing to push more users from Windows Vista than they are from Windows XP. Part of the reason so many XP users are still holding on is because the upgrade process from Windows XP to Windows 7 isn’t as straight forward as it is from Windows Vista. The other reason could be that some people are holding out for the first Service Pack for Windows 7 before they make the change.

Either way, Windows XP is still the dominant player with 60.89 percent of the market, which is only 1 percent less than it had last month.

For the moment Windows 7 seems to be growing mainly at Windows Vistas expense, but of course Windows XP is coming down, but still has a long way to go.

Reports from several outlets yesterday indicated that Microsoft is in the final stages of the release of Windows Phone 7, their long anticipated answer to the Apple iPhone. Their holiday 2010 availability goal seems to be on target. Others are anticipating an earlier release, maybe as soon as October.

If we take Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows Phone Engineering, at his word when he wrote on the Windows Phone 7 Team Blog that Windows Phone 7 is the company’s most thoroughly tested mobile platform. He wrote that there were daily automated run tests on nearly 10,000 devices and a combined more than 3.5 million hours of stress test passes and 8.5 million hours of fully automated test passes. If everything works as intended, then the impact will be felt throughout the mobile community.

Windows Phone 7

Microsoft has many things going for it. For starters, the experience of other companies in their own foray has shown Microsoft what works and what doesn’t. So they can avoid the problems that other companies have had. Specifically, Apple’s antenna problem was a small choking point, which was eventually fixed. Microsoft can do well to avoid such missteps.

On the other hand, there should be a large collection of APPS available for purchase that will compete with Android, and the iPhone. Microsoft users, who have been patient throughout the time when Apple and Google were making hay with their mobile devices should be pleased that the device should be everything that they expect.

What do they expect? Multiple APPS for starters, but also connected to the wide array of Microsoft products that only Microsoft can offer. In that sense, Microsoft should be able to dominate the mobile market within a year. For Microsoft that is some heavy expectations. However, considering how they botched their KIN phone earlier this year, they have a lot to make up for. Users will have to wait, maybe to the end of the year to discover what Microsoft has to offer.

Apple’s iOS has surpassed Linux as the world’s third most-used operating system, according to NetApplications. The OS, which powers all iPod Touches, iPhones, and iPads, currently holds 1.13 percent of the market, while all flavors of Linux account for only .85 percent of the market.

The most-used operating system is still Windows, the various versions of which held steady at a whopping 91.34 percent share. The second-place contender, Apple’s OS X, was slightly down at an even 5.00 percent. Windows 7 itself currently holds 15.87 percent of the market, above Vista’s 14.00 percent but well below the aging XP’s 60.89 percent.

This news surely comes as somewhat of a blow to Linux, which has held the third-place position for the better part of the past decade. Proponents of the open-source OS have always been quick to proclaim that Linux’s time is coming – Windows Vista was supposed to spur wide-scale adoption of Linux, as was the netbook revolution – but this data confirms that it is still largely a niche OS.

Apple’s iOS, on the other hand, powers all of its extremely popular iDevices, and lately appears to have taken priority even over OS X. Apple’s recent keynotes have focused mostly on iOS 4 and 4.1 while OS X 10.7 remains unmentioned, despite evidence of its development.

This site is called Windows 7 News, so it stands to reason that we’d be more concerned with Windows 7?s marketshare than with any other OS or Windows version. Indeed, Windows 7 made headlines last month when it surpassed Windows Vista’s marketshare just ten months after its release to the public. However, it’s important to keep an eye on all competitors, big and small – though iOS doesn’t currently seem to be gaining marketshare at the expense of Windows, it’s entirely possible that tablets could begin to supplant notebooks and netbooks as the mobile computing device of choice.

Can Data Centers exist without switches? That is what Microsoft researchers are exploring to find out. With CamCube, Microsoft Research is looking exploring a new way to connect servers directly to other servers, without the use of any switches or dedicated networking inside a datacenter container.

CamCube

The operation instead is to use “low-level link orientated API” (application programming interface) that allows services to implement their own protocols. Some of the ideas involved are a virtual-machine distribution service, a caching service, an aggregation service, and more.

Camcube- Current- Status

The CamCube project explores the design of a shipping container sized data center with the goal of building an easier platform on which to build these applications. CamCube replaces the traditional switch-based network with a 3D torus topology, (Topologically, a torus is a closed surface defined as the product of two circles: S1 × S1) with each server directly connected to six other servers.

Current data centers, as well as proposals for future ones, use a single routing protocol to route packets between arbitrary servers. CamCube also has a base of multi-hop routing service, where it uses a link-state routing protocol that routes packets on shortest paths and exploits, where possible.

Torus_cycles

The ultimate goal of CamCube is to increase networking performance in increasingly large datacenters that Microsoft, its partners and its customers are building. By changing the internal workings of the communication link between servers using the torus topology and a directly connected interface, bypassing the switch, faster performance can be expected.

Whether this technology ever comes to fruition only Microsoft knows. But it is interesting that with all of the changes that are taking place at the software level for Microsoft, they are engaging in product design which affects hardware operations directly. Datacenters are expected to get larger and larger since so many software elements are now computerized.

Microsoft ran a few promotions during the initial launch of the Windows 7 operating system. One of those was the release of the Windows 7 Family Pack, with the aim to offer households in the US and select countries a better deal for the money.

The family pack included three Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade licenses, which meant that PCs of a household needed a copy of XP or Vista in order to legally install the operating system (there are no technical restrictions on the other hand).

The Windows 7 Family Pack retailed for $149.99 back then, which was about half the price that customers had to pay for three separate Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade licenses. A good deal, if at least two of the licenses would be put to use.

windows 7 family pack

The limited availability of the family pack, and the even cheaper pre-order packages, meant that not every customer who wanted to buy a package could do so.

Microsoft today announced that they would revitalize the Windows 7 Home Family pack to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Windows 7 launch.

The details of the deal remain the same. Customers can pay $149.99 for three Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade licenses. The packs will be available at select retailers and the Microsoft Store, it is likely that last year’s retailers will again be on board.

The pack will be available on October 3 in the US. International users will also be able to buy the Family Pack, starting October 22. It will go on sale in countries such as Canada, UK, Germany, France and Australia at that day or after, depending on the launch date in those countries).

We keep you update as soon as the packs hits the stores.
